In the perfect world, water would only flow one direction. So when fresh water was flowing into your home from the city water supply, you would know that it was pure and safe to consume. However, water flow is dictated by water pressure. Water always flows in the direction of the highest force. And when that pressure changes in a series of pipes, like your home and the city water main, the water could change direction if there is no backflow prevention built into the system.
A backflow prevention device is designed to stop water from being pulled back into the city water main and contaminating the supply should there be a significant loss of water pressure. For example, if a city water line breaks or there is a large fire that demands a great deal of water for city fire hydrants, the city main’s water pressure could drop below the water pressure in homes and businesses throughout the city.
